beginner's guide to fantasy drawing
Book Review: Beginner's Guide to Fantasy Drawing
Submitted by Teoh Yi Chie on
In case you miss reading the book's description, to be more precise, this book is actually on drawing fantasy characters rather than fantasy art.
This is a 180-page paperback published by 3dtotal Publishing that's filled with beginner tips on how you can get started with drawing characters. The first few pages teaches the basic techniques on drawing, shading, colouring and anatomy.
The rest of the book has step-by-step tutorials that show you the process of creating a character from start to finish. Five tutorials are on characters, another five on creatures. The tutorials start with research, design and sketching, inking and colouring. There are plenty of tips on how you can make your character look more interesting and lively. The explanations go through the reasons and concepts for drawing in certain ways so that you can understand the rationale and apply that to your own characters.
This is a very hands-on easy-to-follow drawing book that I can easily recommend to beginners.
Below are the artists whose tutorials are featured in the book.
- Martin J Abel
- Johan Egerkrans
- Roma Gewska
- Maria Wejs Henriksen
- Marion Kivits
- Carissa Kaye Powell
- Valentina Remenar
- Leon Ropeter
- Audre "Charamath" Schutte
- Khoa Tran Viet
- Frank William
